CW - What has caused you to be in a chair and when did it happen?

AW - In 1981 I had a fluke fall up skiing and nosedived into a rock under the snow and dislocated my neck.

CW - Are you a paraplegic or tetraplegic?

AW - I am a C6/7 tetraplegic.  One hand works well, one is on half speed but one is all you need.

CW - Tell us about any surgery that you have had since your accident.

CATWALK TALKS TO CHRIS LAY

CW: What has caused you to be in a chair and when did it happen?

CL: Just over one year ago I was a dairy farm manager, it was my weekend off and I was on my way to the pub for a few beers o a Saturday night. I fell asleep at the wheel of a motor vehicle travelling along one of the straighter roads I know. I veered off the road, the car flipped several times and I was trapped for four hours after breaking my neck in the accident.

The CatWalk Trust's commitment to getting people up and out of wheelchairs is made easier by Taupo's Paul Donaldson who proved it is possible.

Paul was confined to a wheelchair aged 23 when he broke his back in a fall in 2003, but has battled adversity and science to walk again.

Following the accident, Paul had steel rods inserted to ease the pressure on his spine and stabilise his back, but was told he was a paraplegic and would be confined to a wheelchair forever.
