CatWalk’s initiatives encompass a wide range of scientific and medical explorations. Each plays a crucial role in the mission to cure spinal cord injury.
Spinal cord research is extraordinarily demanding. Unlike the brain, the spinal cord is constantly in motion. It bends; it stretches; it twists. We’re still learning how it functions and what is controls.
Assessing a spinal cord injury is even more difficult. And, while some tissues in the body can heal, spinal cord nerve cells do not readily regenerate. Instead, the body forms scar tissue and releases molecules that actively block regrowth.
Every spinal cord injury is unique. The level of injury, its severity and its cause all shape recovery. Understanding the spinal cord and the specific injury is vital to effective diagnosis, prognosis and treatment.
Spinal cord injury remains one of medicine’s most complex challenges.
CatWalk funds comprehensive, combinational research and encourages collaboration to focus researchers on one goal – to heal the spinal cord and restore function, sensation and movement.
Below is an outline of the areas funded by CatWalk, highlighting their importance and contribution. Each is crucial to curing spinal cord injury paralysis. Although linear in layout, these initiatives are taking place concurrently to accelerate to a cure.
