This year Catwalk is privileged to welcome Rich Hill Stud to the stage.
Established in 1994, Matamata’s Rich Hill Stud, under the inspired leadership of John and Colleen Thompson has risen to become one of the leading thoroughbred nurseries in NZ.
Adept at the fine art of stallion selection, John has built up a highly impressive stallion roster, headed by Proisir, NZ’s Champion Sire and the leading sire in Australasia for Group 1 winners in the most recently completed racing season. Proisir’s success has led to an influx of Australian breeders keen to use the stallion’s services, something the NZ market hasn’t experienced since the heady days of champion stallion Zabeel.
The recently concluded NZ National Yearling Sale at Karaka saw a Proisir filly sell to Australia for $1.6 million, a record price for a yearling filly sold at auction in NZ. His yearlings at Karaka averaged an incredible $275,000 and they sold to $450,000 at the Gold Coast Magic Millions.
What is significant and truly a pointer to his future success is that Proisir has accomplished these outstanding deeds without necessarily the top echelon of broodmare support. Understandably that has changed over the last 18 months and the imagination knows no bounds to what the progeny of those upgraded mares are to achieve in the seasons to come. Proisir’s rise to stardom has truly been incredible and the rare opportunity to secure a service to him offers the successful purchaser a golden opportunity to join that journey with the team at Rich Hill.
